Academic Half Day Program

Guidelines for Session Facilitators

Prior to Your Session

At least ONE week prior to the session please provide the Program Assistant (cc. Program Coordinator) with the following:

  1. A MAXIMUM of two pre-readings that you would like the residents to read prior to coming to your session.  One or both of these readings should be a high quality review article.  If you choose to provide a practice guideline as one of your pre-readings, please specify the areas of the guideline that you would like the resident to focus on (if it is a lengthy document).
  2. A list of pre-session objectives, which refer to those objectives that you would like the resident to achieve prior to coming to the session.
  3. A list of session objectives, which refer to those objectives that you would like the resident to be able to achieve after completing the session.
  4. A copy of the case(s) and any other teaching materials that will be used during the session.

The Program Assistant will upload the pre-readings, pre-session and session objectives and cases in one45 so that they are available for review by the residents prior to attending the session.

Session Logistics and Location

  1. All sessions will take place in a classroom at KGH and RIH.  This room is equipped with a screen and wireless internet.  Check the AHD schedule above for the exact location of the sessions.  If you require a laptop, please bring your own.
  2. A case-based format is appropriate for all therapeutic topics and therefore slides should typically not be necessary, given that the residents should spend the session working through the cases.  However, slides can be used to elaborate on key concepts if deemed appropriate by the session facilitator.

Session Videoconferencing

  1. A number of the sessions will be videoconferenced using Zoom.  Specifically, any session where all residents and the session facilitator are not at KGH/RIH will be videoconferenced.  Check the AHD schedule above to determine if your session will be taught over videoconference.
  2. Session facilitators will receive an invite that includes the Zoom link in advance of the session.
  3. Residents will obtain the Zoom link from their Academic Half Day Schedule in one45.
  4. Session facilitators and residents should sign-in using the Zoom link on their computer (video on) and put their computers on mute.
  5. The Interior Health Resident Representative will be responsible for setting-up the room videoconferencing at the beginning of the session and will link the room equipment to the session Zoom so that the room audio can be used for sound.
  6. Session facilitators are encouraged to consider how videoconferencing may affect their teaching and to adapt the session teaching/content, as appropriate, to ensure a positive learning environment for all learners.

Session Format

The format used for your session will depend on the content being taught.  Facilitators are encouraged to use the most appropriate format to allow for achievement of the session objectives.

A case-based format is required for therapeutic topics.  If unsure about which teaching style would be most appropriate for your topic, please discuss with the Program Coordinator.

Regardless of the format used, sessions are meant to be interactive.  The residents are expected to be actively involved in their own learning during the sessions.

Session Content

Session facilitators are encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator at any time to discuss session content or teaching methods.  The Program Coordinator is available any time to review session material/cases, to discuss content or pre-readings or simply to answer any questions that the session facilitator may have.
