 Evaluation of the Preceptor

IH Program Policies

  1. The preceptor will be evaluated by the resident on their knowledge, skills and attitudes as a role model, teacher and preceptor.  A single evaluation form will be used to the evaluate both the preceptor and the rotation.  This form will be sent to the resident via one45 on the Tuesday of the last week of the rotation.
  2. The evaluation will provide the preceptor with valuable information regarding their precepting and teaching skills to allow them to further develop their precepting and teaching skills.   
  3. The preceptor will be committed to self-assessment and making active use of constructive feedback provided by the resident, Program Coordinator or Program Director.

Evaluation of the Preceptor

  1. The resident will evaluate the preceptor at the end of the rotation.  The evaluation should be completed within ONE WEEK of the end of the rotation and preferably on the last day of the rotation.
  2. The resident will discuss their evaluation with the preceptor in a face-to-face manner.
  3. The resident is expected to provide honest and constructive feedback to the preceptor in a professional and courteous manner.
  4. At their Meetings with the Program Coordinator, the resident will be able to provide the any additional confidential feedback to the Program Coordinator about the rotation.
  5. All concerns or disagreements about the evaluations between the resident and preceptor should be discussed in a professional and constructive manner with attempts made to resolve the issues.  If these issues cannot be resolved, the preceptor or resident should contact the Program Coordinator who will discuss the issues with both the preceptor and resident.
  6. The resident should contact the Program Coordinator at ANYTIME to discuss any preceptor or rotation concerns.  The Program Coordinator will provide necessary support and take steps as required to resolve the concerns.   
  7. The preceptor will review and sign-off on the evaluations of them.
  8. The Program Coordinator will review and sign-off on all evaluations of the preceptor.
  9. At the end of the residency year, the evaluations of the preceptor will be collated and provided to the preceptor's supervisor/manager for review and placement in the preceptor’s employee file.  As part of the preceptor's annual performance review with their supervisor/manager, the preceptor will complete a self-assessment to aid in self-reflection.  This reflection will be discussed with their direct supervisor/manager and feedback provided by the residents and Program Coordinator and Program Director will incorporated into the preceptor's annual performance review and will aid the preceptor in setting goals as part of this review process.

NOTE: All project preceptors and Academic Half Day facilitators will also be evaluated as outlined in the relevant program activity pages and documents.

 

Evaluation of the Rotation

The rotation will be evaluated by the resident based on its organization and structure and its ability to provide the residents the opportunity to meet the goals and objectives of the rotation and Program.  A single evaluation form will be used to evaluate both the preceptor and the rotation.  This form will be sent to the resident via one45 on the Tuesday of the last week of the rotation.
  2. The evaluation will provide the preceptor and Program Coordinator will valuable information regarding the quality of the rotation to allow for the continual quality improvement of rotations.

  1. The resident will evaluate the rotation at the end of the rotation.  The evaluation should be completed within ONE WEEK of the end of the rotation and preferably on the last day of the rotation.
