Presentations and Journal Clubs

Residents will deliver a number of different presentations throughout the residency year.  These include pharmacy case presentations, presentations to other health professionals, patients or the public, as well as journal clubs.

Expectations of the Resident for Presentations and Journal Clubs

  1. Prior to delivering the presentation, the resident will document some learning objectives that they have for themselves for the presentation on the Resident Presentation and Journal Clubs Objectives and Reflection form.  The resident will send this form to themselves prior to the presentation.  Instructions for doing this are below.
  2. Prior to delivering the presentation, the resident will send the assessment form below to their preceptor so that the preceptor can assess them during the presentation.
  3. After the presentation, the resident will reflect of how their presentation went in the Resident Presentation and Journal Clubs Objectives and Reflection form that they sent to themselves prior to the presentation, including what went well and what they would like to improve on. 
  4. The resident will also add a copy of the presentation (PDF handout or slides) to the Residency Presentation folder.  The Program Coordinator will send the residents the link to the folder.  The Program is required to maintain copies of presentations for accreditation purposes.  These will be maintained in a confidential folder.  
  5. The resident will include learning objectives for the learner (i.e. audience) at the beginning of ALL presentations.

Case Presentations

Residents will have opportunities to develop and deliver case presentations as part of their direct patient care rotations.  These presentations will be delivered to the Interior Health Pharmacy department as part of Pharmacy Live Rounds.  The 20-minute case presentation will focus on outlining the resident's care plan to resolve a DTP of focus for a patient that the resident provided care to.  This case presentation will consist of the following:

  • Learning objectives 
  • Patient case
  • Prioritized medical problems
  • Prioritized drug therapy problems
  • Drug therapy problem of focus
  • Background information to relate the DTP of focus to clinical question
  • Goals of therapy for the DTP of focus
  • Therapeutic alternatives for the DTP of focus
  • Clinical question (PICO)
  • Literature selection and appraisal
  • Summary of the evidence
  • Therapeutic recommendation(s)/care plan to resolve the DTP of focus
  • Monitoring plan 
  • Follow-up
  • Questions from the audience

The following assessment form will be used to assess residents during all case presentations:

Competency-Based Assessment of Resident Case Presentation 

For case presentations conducted during rotations, residents will be responsible for sending this assessment to their preceptor via one45 prior to their case presentation so that the preceptor can assess the resident during the presentation. 

Resident Instructions for Sending Case Presentation Assessment Form to Your Preceptor

Residents are to follow these instructions to send the case presentation assessment form to their preceptor for case presentations that occur during rotations.  For the BC Case Presentations, the evaluation will automatically be sent to the evaluators.  Residents do not need to send this form to the BC Case Presentation evaluators.

1. At the beginning of every direct patient care rotation, the link below will appear in your one45 To Do lists:

 

2. Prior to the day of your presentation, click on the link.  A new box opens.  Choose the assessment form: "Competency-Based Assessment of Resident Case Presentation".  Choose the Preceptor who is to assess you.  Choose the date of the presentation.  Click submit.  The assessment will be sent to the preceptor and will appear in their To Do list in one45.

3. If this link does not appear in your "To Do" box, please contact the Program Coordinator to request that this assessment be sent to your preceptor.  

Journal Clubs 

Residents will have opportunities to facilitate journal clubs as part of their direct patient care rotations.

The following assessment will be used to assess the residents during all journal clubs that the resident facilitates. 

Competency-Based Assessment of Resident-Journal Club

For journal clubs conducted during rotations, residents will be responsible for sending this assessment to their preceptor via one45 prior to their journal club so that the preceptor can assess the resident during the journal club.  Residents should follow the instructions above and choose "Competency-Based Assessment of Resident-Journal Club" to send the assessment to their preceptor. 

Inservice (Non-Case Based) Presentations

Residents will have opportunities to deliver non-case based presentations, such as in-services to other health care professionals, patients or the public as part of their direct patient care rotations.

Presentations, such as those to other health professionals/nursing inservices that are not case presentations, can be evaluated using the following assessment form. 

Competency-Based Assessment for Resident Inservice (Non-Case-Based) Presentation

For presentations delivered that are not case-based presentations conducted during rotations, residents will be responsible for sending this assessment to their preceptor via one45 prior to their presentation so that the preceptor can assess the resident during the presentation.  Residents should follow the instructions above to choose the "Competency-Based Assessment for Resident Inservice (Non-Case-Based) Presentation".

Resident Instructions for Learning Objectives and Reflection for Presentations and Journal Clubs

  1. In the To Do screen in one45 follow the instructions above to self-send the Resident Presentation and Journal Club Objectives and Reflection form to yourself. 
  2. Choose the rotation that you are on.  Do this for project presentations as well.  For BC Presentations, this form will be sent to you.
  3. List some objectives that you have for yourself for the presentation. 
  4. Save the form.
  5. After the presentation, reflect in this form about what went well and what you learned or would like to improve on. 
  6. Submit the form. 
  7. This process is to be followed for all rotation presentations and journal clubs, your BC Case Presentations and your project presentations.
